introducing: oswald!

in spellbound, there are lots of new folks to meet. we’re still fleshing out all the villagers, but there is one that we have known would be apart of our world since the beginning. and that is oswald, the tea loving bear with a mysterious past. without giving too much away, he will be the first new friend you make when you start.

years ago, midnightchems was dm’ing for our d&d group, and what began as a chance encounter with a bear, became a multi-life long friendship. funny enough, he was never intended to be a permanent character. oswald has made several appearances throughout our campaigns, and not necessarily always as a bear. he’s known many shapes and sizes, but he’s always the same grumpy old bear on the inside.

currently, as i write this, oswald is due for an updated sprite. i have loved this one a lot so it’s been hard to move on, but hazel has had quite a few updates and my art has definitely improved. i’m excited to take another crack at him, but there’s so much to do right now. i currently have an 8 direction walking sprite animation going, and that has taken me ages. animation is straight up torture, to be honest.

i’ll get around to him eventually though! being the only artist on the team definitely makes everything drag but to be honest, i don’t have any plans to add another artist to the team. i have what you might call… control issues, when it comes to the creative decisions. this is my passion project so putting the reins in someone else’s hands just doesn’t feel right. i take great inspiration from eric barone, the creator of stardew valley. he did it all on his own, 100%. i’m just glad i have a programmer on my team or else this would just be an art installation !
